Source-grounded research assistant that answers only from documents you upload, with citations back to the text.
What it is good at
Answers are constrained to the sources you supply, so it fabricates far less than open-ended chatbots and every claim links to a passage. Handles PDFs, Docs, slides, web pages and video transcripts in one notebook. Audio Overview turns a source set into a two-host podcast, which genuinely helps students who process by listening.
Use it for
Loading a semester of course readings and having students interrogate them with questions the citations must answer. Building an audio version of a dense theory chapter for students who commute. Letting ESL students query a difficult text in plain language while seeing the original sentence it came from.
Where it falls short
It still misreads sources and will confidently summarize a document it partly OCR'd wrong, so citations need spot-checking. Audio Overviews flatten nuance and occasionally invent connective tissue between sources that no author wrote. Renamed from NotebookLM in July 2026, which broke a lot of existing faculty documentation and bookmarks.
